Yep. Old man winter is at it again!
Let's make the most of it!
by Patricia Fargnoli
If you have seen the snow
under the lamppost
piled up like a white beaver hat on the picnic table
or somewhere slowly falling
into the brook
to be swallowed by water,
then you have seen beauty
and know it for its transience.
And if you have gone out in the snow
for only the pleasure
of walking barely protected
from the galaxies,
the flakes settling on your parka
like the dust from just-born stars,
the cold waking you
as if from long sleeping,
then you can understand
how, more often than not,
truth is found in silence,
how the natural world comes to you
if you go out to meet it,
its icy ditches filled with dead weeds,
its vacant birdhouses, and dens
full of the sleeping.
But this is the slowed-down season
held fast by darkness
and if no one comes to keep you company
then keep watch over your own solitude.
In that stillness, you will learn
with your whole body
the significance of cold
and the night,
which is otherwise always eluding you.
Thank you to all of you who were able to join us yesterday in Franklin, MA. It was wonderful to be with so many of you and to have 17 people receive the Transmission. I know that causes and conditions were challenging and in some cases insufficient for all of you who wanted to be with us to attend...and i know you were with us in spirit. I am feeling very grateful for our beloved community.
This is just a reminder that we will be gathering this evening at the UU Congregation of South County on North Road in Peace Dale at 6 PM. Cindy will be facilitating and we will be continuing to look at Thay's teachings on the Fourteen Trainings. This time we will look at ways of practicing with the Fifth one on Compassionate, Healthy Living (below) . I hope you will be able to be with us. The last I heard, it seems that the weather will not be getting too bad until later in the evening...if it changes it's mind we can always end a bit early. I hope you will be able to be with us.
Don't forget to register for the Aldersgate retreat if you would like to join us...There are not too many spaces left and the Early Bird special will end mid month! All the info and registration forms are available at joannefriday.com
There are also scholarships available...so I hope that you will not let finances be a hindrance.
Here is something to brighten your day....It's called three wishes and I wish everyone could see it...yet another 11 year old shero! What an inspiration and...yes...one person can make a BIG difference in this world!
with lots of love and many hugs,
The Fifth Mindfulness Training: Compassionate, Healthy Living
Aware that true happiness is rooted in peace, solidity, freedom, and compassion, we are determined not to accumulate wealth while millions are hungry and dying nor to take as the aim of our life fame, profit, wealth, or sensual pleasure, which can bring much suffering and despair. We will practice looking deeply into how we nourish our body and mind with edible foods, sense impressions, volition, and consciousness. We are committed not to gamble or to use alcohol, drugs or any other products which bring toxins into our own and the collective body and consciousness such as certain websites, electronic games, TV programs, films, magazines, books and conversations. We will consume in a way that preserves compassion, peace, joy, wellbeing in our bodies and consciousness and in the collective body and consciousness of our families, our society, and the earth.
