The Mind is a clear blue sky,
clouds come, clouds go,
but the mind is a clear blue sky.
Thich Nhat Hanh
"Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky."
When you're a kid, you lay in the grass and watch the clouds going over, and you literally don't have a thought in your mind. It's purely meditation, and we lose that.
Dick Van Dyke
I hope you are well and enjoying this crisp fall morning.
Seems like there are lots of clouds floating by in this world of ours ..our job is not to get distracted by the clouds, but to know that behind the clouds is a clear blue sky. This requires some practice.
We will have an opportunity to practice this together this evening at 6 PM at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of South County at the Lily Pads complex on North Rd. in Peace Dale. We will enjoy a sitting meditation, look deeply at the Twelfth Mindfulness Training...Reverence for Life. What a perfect time to be deepening our practice of that Training. We will recite the Five Trainings and share the Dharma. Clare will facilitate. We hope you will be able to be with us.
The Twelfth Mindfulness Training: Reverence for Life
Aware that much suffering is caused by war and conflict, we are determined to cultivate nonviolence, compassion and the insight of interbeing in our daily lives and promote peace education, mindful mediation, and reconciliation within families, communities, ethnic and religious groups, nations, and in the world. We are committed not to kill and not to let others kill. We will not support any act of killing in the world, in our thinking or in our way of life. We will diligently practice deep looking with our Sangha to discover better ways to protect life, prevent war, and build peace.
Tomorrow, the 7th, we have the opportunity to celebrate Laura French's birthday with her at the South County Nursing and Rehabilitation, 740 Oak Hill Rd, North Kingstown, RI. Our dear friend Margaret Hahn has been visiting regularly and caring for Laura. She sent the announcement and update to the google group...and I am including it below for those of you who are not on that group. I will be there at 1 to offer a short meditation for Laura. If you are able to be with us that would be lovely.
DAY OF MINDFULNESS - change of venue
I have been invited to offer a Day of Mindfulness in West Hartford on the 19th.
The original space is under construction...the new location will be The Village for Families and Children at 331 Wethersfield Ave., Hartford, CT 06114.
We will be looking at the teachings on taking refuge. In these turbulent times, it can be very nourishing to take refuge in the practice and in the Sangha. The registration forms can be found at joannefriday.com and below...
This Tuesday is Yom Kippur the holiest day of the Jewish calendar. A Day of Atonement. Between Rosh Hoshannah (Jewish New Year) and Yom Kippur people are invited to look deeply at any suffering they have caused and to make amends. It is a wonderful time for beginning anew and forgiveness. A beautiful tradition. We hold our Jewish friends in our prayers and say 'G'mar Hatima Tova" - "May you be sealed in the Book of Life." Perhaps at this sacred time we might join them in making amends and beginning anew.
We have lots and lots of opportunities to practice in a world that is suffering in many ways. It is important to water seeds of joy. For me, I like to be reminded of the basic goodness of human beings...here is a lovely example...
with lots of love and the joy of a brand new day for you,
AN UPDATE ON LAURA AND INVITATION FOR HER BIRTHDAY
Laura French, our friend and Sangha sister who lives at the South County Nursing and Rehabitation Center, has a birthday on October 7. I’ll be visiting her and bringing birthday cake at about 1pm and then stay until around 3pm.
Please come by for a visit, and share the cake and good wishes.
You may recall that Laura has limited speech, but is quite aware and can respond with single words or with eye and facial gestures. She enjoys visits any time, not just for her birthday. Good times to visit are between 10am and 3pm. She is most alert earlier in the day. Bring your iPad or iPhone and play a short Dharma talk from Thay or Joanne. Or bring a book of Thay’s and read for a bit. If you are not sure where she is, stop at the North side nurses station and they’ll help you find her.
And cards and letters are great too!! Kate OKula and I visit regularly and read those to her. She would love to hear from you.
Please contact me if you have questions. I’ll be happy to help.
With all my best regards
