Darkness and Light, Suffering and Joy
"The winter solstice has always been special to me as a barren darkness that gives birth to a verdant future beyond imagination, a time of pain and withdrawal that produces something joyfully inconceivable, like a monarch butterfly masterfully extracting itself from the confines of its cocoon, bursting forth into unexpected glory."
— Gary Zukav
"People don't notice whether it's winter or summer when they're happy."
— Anton Chekhov
"In the depth of winter I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer."
— Albert Camus
"Kindness is like snow — it beautifies everything it covers."
— Kahlil Gibran
I hope you are all well, enjoying the darkness, it's invitation to come home to ourselves and look inward in order to understand...and also celebrating the return of the light!

Dear friends and family,
Annie Dimakatso passed away around 3:30am Tuesday morning at UCSF. Please send her love in your prayers and meditations.
She'd want you to know that she loved you all.
If you feel called to offer support, I believe she'd want her life to inspire people to create a more peaceful and just world. So find some way of getting involved in work for social change, and engage wholeheartedly as a way of keeping Annie's memory alive.

Please continue to hold our very dear friend and wonderful teacher, Thay Phap Ho who is the abbot of Deer Park Monastery in your hearts and prayers. He learned about three or four months ago that he has a very aggressive form of cancer and is undergoing some very challenging immunotherapy. Br. Phap Ho has been a very wonderful teacher and inspiration for me. He is one of the sweetest beings on the planet. He has been very active with the Earth Holders global sangha to deepen our care for Mother Earth. You can enjoy one of his Dharma talks here - http://deerpark.libsyn.com/2017-04-28-brother-phap-ho If you feel so moved, please send a card to let him know that you are holding him in your prayers.

That is the best report you can get...so she doesn't even need to go on maintainance meds. Please continue to send prayers for continued healing and renewal.

Remember the Plum Village App!!!
Plum Village has created a wonderful app...with talks, songs and a mindfulness bell on a timer...I have included the letter that Plum Village sent below.
This is also a time of year to deepen our practice of generosity...not particularly in giving things...although our local Jonnycake and Welcome House always need our support, but it is also our time and our presence. Here is a beautiful story about the transformation and healing that can result from generosity....it is about the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree...it is "the rest of the story" Enjoy!
If you are celebrating holidays, I hope you enjoy every moment...If you are not celebrating holidays, I hope you are enjoying every moment!
May all beings be love, be loved and at peace.
with much love and many blessings for all of you,
