One day Ananda, who had been thinking deeply about things for a while, turned to the Buddha and exclaimed:“Lord, I’ve been thinking- spiritual friendship is at least half of the spiritual life!” The Buddha replied: “Say not so, Ananda, say not so. Spiritual friendship is the whole of the spiritual life!” Samyutta Nikaya, Verse 2
There is nothing on this earth more to be prized than true friendship. Thomas Aquinas
My best friend is the one who brings out the best in me. Henry Ford
A friend is someone who knows the song in your heart and can sing it back to you when you have forgotten the words. Donna Roberts
I hope you are all well and enjoying this autumn evening. We celebrated our dear teacher Thich Nhat Hanh's 92nd Continuation Day yesterday. Here is a wonderful article about him...https://www.lionsroar.com/the-life-of-thich-nhat-hanh/ We are forever grateful to him for showing us how to retrain our minds and be freer and happier, to love one another and be at peace. Sending all of our love and gratitude to him today. If you would like to support him and the continuation of his work in the world you can find ways to do that at https://thichnhathanhfoundation.org

You have probably all noticed that we are living in tumultuous times. We are confronted with daily opportunities to deepen our practice. We have a front row seat to see how the poisons of which the Buddha spoke - hatred, greed and delusion play themselves out. Thay and the Buddha have given us a roadmap to help us to effectively navigate....
This is the last line of the 9th of our 14 Mindfulness Trainings.
"We will do our best to speak out about situations of injustice, even when doing so may make difficulties for us or threaten our safety."
the First Training of the Fourteen..."We understand that fanaticism in its many forms is the result of perceiving things in a dualistic or discriminative manner. We will train ourselves to look at everything with openness and the insight of interbeing in order to transform dogmatism and violence in ourselves and the world.”
And of course, as we try to take effective action...we need to remember to breathe, maintain our clarity and water seeds of joy!
and remember how wonderful it is to be a part of this glorious cosmos of ours....and that we have the capacity to survive in extraordinary circumstances.
with much love and the pure joy of interbeing with all of you, Joanne
DIRECTIONS TO THE WEST HOME We live about 2 miles from URI. From rt 138, go north onto Old North Rd. (across the street from big sign ““Kingston Hill Store Books Used and Rare””. Also, just a smidge west of the 138/108 traffic light). Old North Rd starts off as a one way, continues on as a two way street, and finally ends as a T. You will see our corner property from there. Go left at the T (Old North Rd meets Stoneyfort Rd), and then a quick right onto Plantation Dr. We are the first home on the right (2nd driveway is easiest). Come on in the side door (porch/kitchen)!
