1-6-18 Sangha Update - Happy New Year and Honoring Our Ancestors

Many blessings for the new year!and for our Christian brothers and sisters...

Happy Epiphany!

The manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles as represented by the Magi (Matthew 2:1–12). - the festival commemorating the Epiphany on January 6 - when the Wise men were said to have arrived at the manger to recognize the divinity of the Christ child - a manifestation of a divine or supernatural being.

According to the Dictionary...

1) : a usually sudden manifestation or perception of the essential nature or meaning of something. (2) : an intuitive grasp of reality through something (such as an event) usually simple and striking. (3) : an illuminating discovery, realization, or disclosure. Dear Friends,

I hope you are all warm and cozy and enjoying this new year. May we all experience many epiphanies - realizations of our true nature of interbeing!

This is a reminder that we will be gathering tomorrow evening to ring in the new year, to honor our ancestors and enjoy being together. If you are willing to brave the cold, we would love to have you join us.

We will gather at our home, 725 Matunuck School House Rd in Wakefield at 6 PM. If you are able to car pool, please do, as the parking will be a bit more limited than usual due to all of the snow we have. (although Richard has been blowing lots and lots of snow around!)

We will enjoy a sitting meditation, look at the qualities of our ancestors that we want to cultivate and look deeply at letting go of one of the obstacles that have hindered us in this past year. We will receive a message from the Buddha and end with a bell meditation. Please bring a photo of an ancestor or two and if you have a bell or two, please bring it/them also . It will be wonderful to be together.

Remember our Day of Mindfulness! Being Peace Together – on January 27 at the Westminster Unitarian Church from 9:30-3:30. Registration is now open!!! All of the information is available at joannefriday.com/calendar There is a registration form to register for the day….and if you want to receive formal Transmission of the Five Mindfulness Trainings, there is information about that and the application form which you will need to fill out and return by Jan. 15. I do hope you will be able to be with us to be peace together for the day.

There is also another opportunity to support and/or participate in a wonderful hiking retreat with the monastics and some lay practitioners who will be hiking part of the Appalachian Trail. Our dear friends, Brother Phap Lu'u and Aurora and Joaquin, Order members from CT, have sent on some information (see below) and they created a website to tell about it. Please consider supporting them as you are able.

Engaged Practice For those who are interested, There will be a Women's March in Providence on January 20 from 12-2 at the State House in Providence. https://www.facebook.com/341941259604698/videos/341943889604435/

Here is a beautiful example of compassion in action.

This is what can happen when we don't react from our small ego centered self and our own woundedness...but can see the other person's suffering.... understanding our common humanity. A beautiful example of compassion and skillful means. That's my inspiration for today...to try a little tenderness!

And here is a beautiful example of the beauty of ice...

with much love and the joy of this moment for you,

Dear Sangha family,

Hope you are having a great new beginning.

This year Joaquin and I are helping some monastics from Plum Village organize a new kind of pilgrimage/hiking mindfulness retreat in the wilderness. We will go along the Appalachian trail for 7 weeks. Starting in Blue Cliff Monastery April 8th, 2018 and finishing with a Peace Walk on the Mall in Washington DC.

We have the aspiration to do the retreat in a donation/dana basis. In order to support this we created a fundraiser campaign.

Please think about supporting us in however small or large way, and by sharing the link to our fundraiser campaign with friends and family.
