10-7-17 Sangha Update

We picnicked, sang, and were joyfully together in the rain!

We used the theater as a meditation hall

We walked in Peace with Thay and the Sangha

Our happiness cannot be dependent on anybody or any thing outside of ourselves. Thich Nhat Hanh

“We can never obtain peace in the outer world until we make peace with ourselves.” ― Dalai Lama XIV

“Each one has to find his peace from within. And peace to be real must be unaffected by outside circumstances.” ― Mahatma Gandhi

Dear Friends,

Thank you all who were able to be with us to celebrate our Sangha's 25th anniversary. It was lovely to be with so many sincere folks. doing our best to be peace in these challenging times. It was wonderful to be with everyone to enjoy the picnic on Saturday. (We did not let the rain dampen our spirits and were joyfully together!) And it was lovely to see "Walk With Me" and then enjoy walking meditation along the river. Thank you again to all of you who created conditions for all of this to be possible. We are very blessed.

Also, a big thank you to the Cable Car Cinema. Because the response was so good, they have decided to continue to show the film from today through Thursday! http://www.cablecarcinema.com If you know of anyone who wanted to see it, but did not get tickets, please let them know. It would be lovely to support the Cable Car since they were so supportive of us.

There will be a gathering this coming Sunday at the home of Cindy and John West at 6 PM. (directions below)There will be sitting/walking/sitting meditation, we will continue to look at Thay's teachings in the book, "Silence". and we will share the Dharma. I hope you will be able to be there.

Save the Date! Fall Day of Mindfulness on Saturday, Oct. 28, 10am-4pm. Dharma teacher Joanne Friday will speak on the theme “Mindfulness in Difficult Times”. Location: The Village for Families and Children, 1680 Albany Avenue, Hartford CT The registration deadline is Oct. 19. Information and registration at...... http://joannefriday.com/calendar/

It's always a lovely gathering of sweet people..I hope you will be able to be with us to deepen our practice together.

Also, if any of you are interested in receiving formal Transmission of the Five Trainings, we will be scheduling a Ceremony, so please let me know.

The world continues to be filled with crises. In my last email I sent links to help those affected by the various hurricanes and the earthquake in Mexico.

There are a lot of folks thinking up creative ways to help. Lin-Manuel Miranda, of "Hamilton" fame, composed a song and asked a group of famous singers to participate and in just two weeks released it for Puerto Rican Relief. All proceeds from downloads and streams of "Almost Like Praying" will go to the Hispanic Federation's disaster relief fund to aid Puerto Rico...Enjoy!

There are also lots of opportunities for engaged practice, please join our google group where these opportunities are shared.Contact Cindy at westnest5@verizon.net

Some Sangha members have also created a Facebook page for the Rhode Island Community of Mindfulness. You might like to visit it also for up to date information on Sangha happenings.

I hope you can be with us soon...and until then, I hope that you will be able to be peace and engage in as many acts of kindness as you can...the world needs lots of kindness right now. It is a wonderful thing to contribute to the collective!

with much love and the deep peace of the darkness before dawn for you,

Joanne

DIRECTIONS TO THE WEST HOME

We live about 2 miles from URI. From rt 138, go north onto Old North Rd. (across the street from big sign ““Kingston Hill Store Books Used and Rare””. Also, just a smidge west of the 138/108 traffic light). Old North Rd starts off as a one way, continues on as a two way street, and finally ends as a T. You will see our corner property from there. Go left at the T (Old North Rd meets Stoneyfort Rd), and then a quick right onto Plantation Dr. We are the first home on the right (2nd driveway is easiest). Come on in the side door (porch/kitchen)!
