Dear Friends,
I hope this finds you warm and cozy and well and that you have enjoyed counting your blessings this week.
This is just a reminder that there will be a movie and potluck tonight at our home...725 Matunuck School House Rd. It turns out that there will be a global prayer being offered for those at Standing Rock at 4 PM which is when our movie was scheduled to begin. So we will have a short meditation right at 4 PM. Please arrive a little before 4 so we can begin our sit at that time. Then we will see the film, "Bill Cunningham: New York."  It is a delightful film about a very interesting man. Craig Wilson of USA Today said, " Even if you have no interest in New York Society, Photography, Fashion or Eccentrics, it's a don't miss flick. I went to this movie because it was highly recommended , I left the movie feeling I had been given a gift. "  It is a beautiful example of a person who stays true to himself and his art no matter what his circumstances. Then around 5:30, we will enjoy a vegetarian potluck supper. I hope you are able to be with us for all or part of the evening. Please RSVP if you would like to join us...so we can know how to set up.
The fourth Sunday Sangha gathering will be held at the home of the Van Horns at 6 PM on Sunday evening. (directions below). There will be sitting/walking/sitting and a sharing of the Dharma.

Also, once again this year Kenley Neufeld, a Dharma Teacher from California is offering an on line winter Retreat Practice. Winter Retreat starts today, and Susan Glogovac has sent us all an invitation (see below) to practice together.

Address: 24 Mallory Lane Wakefield, RI 02879 Phone: 401-871-1838 From the North: Take US 1-S to RI-138 Turn right onto RI-138; drive for about 3.5 miles Turn left onto RI-108 S/Kingstown Rd.; drive for 2 miles. You will pass the SK police station, then later a pond, and the Pump House Restaurant on your right. Take the next left onto Rodman Street. (Street sign is hard to see; Dennis Moffit Painting is on the corner and the Peace Dale Mill is on the left.) You will pass the bike path and one stop sign. Mallory Lane will be on your left. Our house is the second on the left. See below for parking.
From the South/West: Take US-1/N past the Matunuck exits Take the Pond St. exit. (right after an exit for Post Rd.) Turn left onto Pond St. Continue until Pond dead ends onto Main. Turn right onto Main. Drive a short distance. Turn left onto High St. Drive past town hall. In about 0.6 mi, turn left onto Allen. At stop sign, turn right onto Rodman. Continue past one stop sign. Mallory Lane is on the right. Our house is the second on the left.
Parking: Our street is narrow, so we ask that you not part on the street. 3-4 cars will fit in our driveway. If there is no space left in the driveway, you can park on Jennifer Dr. Turn left back onto Rodman, and make a quick right onto Jennifer Dr.

Dear Sangha Friends -
I hope this finds you happy and well, and enjoying this season of giving thanks.  So much to be grateful for.
I’ve made a commitment to join this “at home” 90 Day Winter Retreat.  My personal practice will be to once again include one chapter from Thây’s Touching the Earth in my daily meditation.  I did this last year and found it to be a nourishing practice.  Brother Phap De taught me that to do this practice sincerely and regularly can bring great transformation and healing.  I dedicate my practice this year to him.
People who have already joined this retreat (via Facebook) are part of the world-wide Sangha.  It is very supportive to know we are not practicing alone.  Knowing Sangha friends here in the Rhode Island and surrounding areas are practicing in this way would be particularly so.  Are you willing and able to join together in this way?

An Invitation...
90-Day Winter Retreat
Begins on Sunday, November 27, 2016 and will conclude on Sunday, February 26, 2017. Participants will practice individually or as a sangha in their local community with online support and dharma sharing on Facebook.
1 personally identified practice - please share in the comments below what that will be so we can support you.
6 days a week 45 minutes silent sitting
6 times a week silent meal 10 minutes
3 days a week read out loud and or practicing touching the earth with a chapter from "Touching the Earth, Intimate conversations with the Buddha" or "Love Letters to the Earth"
3 times a month practice with a local Sangha
1 day each week with no work (Lazy Day)
1 recitation per month of either the 5 Mindfulness Training or the 14 Mindfulness trainings. There is a telephone recitation of the 14MT that takes place on the First Sunday of each month and all are welcome.
3 times a month participate in a Day of Mindfulness at one of the Plum Village Centers (you can skip this one if there is no practice center near you or find an opportunity locally to participate in a Day of Mindfulness)
1 Dharma Talk per week (to be posted in the Facebook Group)
Touching the Earth, Intimate conversation with the Buddha (book)
Love Letters to the Earth (book)
2000 21-Day Retreat Videos "Eyes of the Buddha" (online video)
Lastly, please help keep the Facebook Group as a container to support the practice. Our posts should focus on our practice during the 90-Day Retreat and not be used for information/news sharing.
A Note About Facebook
Facebook is a super easy and convenient tool for us to support each other during the 90-Day Winter Retreat. However, we are aware that many individuals struggle with using and participating on Facebook. You have three options for limiting Facebook access while still participating in our Group.
  1. By far the easiest method to participate in the Group and not use Facebook is through the Facebook Groups Mobile App. With this app, you only see the Groups and nothing else.
  2. Always use this link https://www.facebook.com/groups/197377563765897/ - it takes you straight to the Group and bypasses the normal Facebook home page.
  3. A possible alternative is that you can determine if you receive notifications and if those notifications will be delivered via email. In theory, you can participate with the Facebook group using email only - getting the posts via email and also being able to reply. However, with email you will not be able to initiate a new post; only being able to reply to posts and you will also need to click through to Facebook to see any video posts.
