“It is said an Eastern monarch once charged his wise men to invent him a sentence to be ever in view, and which should be true and appropriate in all times and situations. They presented him the words, "And this too, shall pass away." How much it expresses! How chastening in the hour of pride! How consoling in the depths of affliction!” Abe Lincoln
“Nothing in the world is permanent, and we’re foolish when we ask anything to last, but surely we’re still more foolish not to take delight in it while we have it.” ― W. Somerset Maugham
I hope you are all well and being peace.
We will have an opportunity to be in peace together on Sunday evening at 6 PM at the home of Cindy and John West. (directions below)
We will enjoy sitting and walking meditation, begin to share from Thay's book "Silence" ( a perfect book for the times in which we are living!) and sharing the Dharma. When we have challenges, Thay tells us to stop and calm our minds and our bodies so that the internal chatter, fear and speculation can subside and we can attain clarity and know what to do and what not to do. Whoever you voted for, the process was so bitter that it is very important right now that we all respond skillfully, rather than react. I hope you can join us.
We will be having the Generations Sangha at Westminster Church in East Greenwich at 10 AM tomorrow. The focus will be on gratitude and generosity. We share some songs, a story and there are projects for the children and a sitting and sharing for the parents. The meeting ends at 11:30 and there are snacks and fellowship for those who wish to stay, until 12.
We will be having a gathering on Monday evening at 6:30 at our home for those interested in helping to take care of the Sangha.
I wanted to thank those of you who responded to the doodle poll I sent out. That is how we chose the time and date. If anyone else is interested in joining us, please do. We will be looking at how the Sangha supports us and how it might support us better. How can we better support each other? Are there activities we would like to engage in together, Days of Mindfulness, Movie nights, etc. A couple of our Sangha members are interested in forming a Social Justice group, which is very much needed now. I hope you can join us.
I have heard from many people who are feeling anxious and fearful. There are many who are organizing gatherings to address the concerns that have been raised because of the hateful nature of the Presidential campaign and how that has colored our national dialogue. According to the news there has been an increase in hate speech and harassment already and the KKK is having a victory parade to celebrate the election. If you are interested in some actions that are being organized to look at ways of responding skillfully to these challenges to the rights of the minority groups in our country, I have included some information below.
The most important thing is for each of us to deepen our practice so that we can be peace in the midst of all of it. Then we will be capable of being of some help. Remember always to breathe before saying or doing anything. Follow the four Noble truths...Suffering exists, look deeply to get to the root causes of the suffering...then look to the Eight Fold Path to find what is necessary to have a skillful response - Right View, Thinking, Speech, Action, Livelihood, Effort, Mindfulness and Concentration. Am I caught in my views? Am I allowing my mind to go off in fear and speculation? Am I taking Skillful action or simply reacting out of habit? ...etc, etc, etc,... We can learn a lot about ourselves in this process and transform a lot of our own suffering.

DIRECTIONS TO THE WEST HOME We live about 2 miles from URI. From rt 138, go north onto Old North Rd. (across the street from big sign ““Kingston Hill Store Books Used and Rare””. Also, just a smidge west of the 138/108 traffic light). Old North Rd starts off as a one way, continues on as a two way street, and finally ends as a T. You will see our corner property from there. Go left at the T (Old North Rd meets Stoneyfort Rd), and then a quick right onto Plantation Dr. We are the first home on the right (2nd driveway is easiest). Come on in the side door (porch/kitchen)!
