Verses on the Faith-Mind,

by the third Chinese Zen Patriarch,

Hsin Hsin Ming by Seng-T'san

1st 6 verses

The Great Way is not difficult
For those who have no preferences.
When love and hate both disappear
All things are clear and undisguised.

Make the smallest distinction, however,
and heaven and earth are set infinitely apart.
If you wish to see the truth
Then hold no opinions for or against anything.

To set up what you like against what you dislike
is the disease of the mind.
When the deep meaning of things is not understood
the mind’s essential peace is disturbed to no avail.

The Way is perfect like vast space
where nothing is lacking and nothing is in excess.
Indeed, it is due to our choosing to accept or reject
that we do not see the true nature of things.

Live neither in the entanglements of outer things,
nor in inner feelings of emptiness.
Be serene in the oneness of things
and such erroneous views will disappear by themselves.

When you try to stop activity to achieve passivity
your very effort fills you with activity
As long as you remain in one extreme or the other
you will never know Oneness
Dear Friends,
I hope you are well and happy and are serene in the oneness of things.
This is a reminder that there will be a gathering this Sunday evening at 6 PM at the home of Cindy West. There will be sitting/walking/sitting, a reading from Thay's book "Fear", a sharing of the Dharma and being joyfully together.
I hope you will be able to attend. (directions below)
Thay is now in North America. He arrived in Canada on Thursday. He will be touring and giving many teachings. His schedule can be found at tnhtour.org.
For those of you able to be with him for the Blue Cliff Retreat at the end of the month, Kristen Morelli has been kind enough to offer to organize ride sharing. If you are interested, please contact her at
For those of you interested in attending the Peace Walk which Thay will lead in Boston on September 15, and are interested in ride sharing, Cindy has kindly offered to organize rides for that. You can contact her at westnest5@verizon.net
We have a great gift in the website...tnhaudio.org. Thay's talks from the summer retreat are available there. The  fifteenth session on questions and answers was especially wonderful. Enjoy!
Two videos that illustrate...
incredible power of concentration and creativity!

with much love and the freshness of a summer morning and twenty-four brand new hours for you,

We live about 2 miles from URI.  From rt 138, go north onto Old North Rd.  (across the street from  big sign ““Kingston Hill Store  Books  Used and Rare””.  Also, just a smidge west of the 138/108 traffic light).  Old North Rd starts off as a one way, continues on as a two way street, and finally ends as a T.  You will see our corner property from there.  Go left at the T (Old North Rd meets Stoneyfort Rd), and then a quick right onto Plantation Dr.  We are the first home on the right (2nd driveway is easiest).  Come on in the side door (porch/kitchen)!
