Happy Columbus Day! Although there is some question about who discovered the new world . . . may we discover a new world for ourselves every day!

If you want to serve the universe, the obvious place to begin is right where you are. That's where I began. I looked at every situation I came into and wondered, "What can I do to be of service in this situation?" Sometimes there was nothing I could do, but often there was - a helping hand, a word of cheer, a pleasant smile. Then, after I had given a lot, a most wonderful spiritual receiving began - giving me more to give. ~ Peace Pilgrim

Dear Friends,

I hope you are doing well and are happy and and enjoying every minute of interbeing with this glorious cosmos and each other!

A deep bow of gratitude to all of those of you who were able to be with us for the Day of Mindfulness last Saturday - the planning team, Jennifer, Ann, and Kristen, and all of you who attended and all of you who helped in so many different ways. We had more folks than we had anticipated . . . 59! . . . and it was wonderful to know that so many are interested in finding ways to be peace. It was a joy to be with all of you. A special thank you to our Anonymous Benefactor who made it possible for all to attend by paying our rent for us . . . What a wonderful gift! Please accept our heartfelt thanks.

There will be a meeting of the Clear Heart Sangha this coming Sunday, October 7, at 6 PM. There will be sitting meditation. Clare will be facilitating this meeting and sends this note to all of us . . .

Dear First of the Month Sunday Sangha Friends,

This Sunday, 10/7 marks our monthly gathering at Lily Pads, the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of South County's meeting place. We will be gathering at 6 p.m. to explore the fourth mindfulness training. It is quite a powerful teaching. Please read it and observe yourself putting it into practice and the obstacles that may arise for your practice. I look forward to seeing all of you.

May you be peaceful and loving, Clare

The Fourth Mindfulness Training is below . . .

There was a meeting of the RI Community of Mindfulness Caretaking Council, and they asked that each Sangha have a person to receive prayer requests and requests for help. Ann Moore has generously offered to be that person for the Clear Heart Sangha. If you are in need of prayers or other types of support, please contact Ann at

She is also looking for volunteer Bodhisattvas who would be willing to help out when needs arise . . . i.e., rides, food, etc., for those who are ill. If enough of us are willing to help out, it could make light work for all of us. If you would be willing to be part of that effort, please contact Ann. I will be having knee surgery in November and she is already looking for helpers if needs arise for me!

Speaking of prayer requests . . . we have one! Our dear Sangha sister Cindy West recently underwent surgery at SC Hospital. She is now home, but it will be a long recovery process. I asked if she would like a prayer request sent to the sangha, and she replied . . .

I guess a quick word about sending me patience, for myself. As a new, inexperienced patient I believe I have much to learn, that, and a healthy recovery. I would appreciate that. thanks!

She has been so healthy, and this is a very new experience for her. Please keep her in your prayers and meditations as well as in your hearts. You can send love to Cindy West, 5 Plantation Dr, Saunderstown, RI 02874.

The Mind Tamers will meet this coming Tuesday evening at 6:30 PM at St. Matthew's Church in West Barrington. There will be sitting/walking and sitting meditation . . . a talk and Dharma sharing. Don and Jim will co-facilitate and it should be a wonderful evening.

The Clear Path Sangha will meet this Wednesday at Westminster Unitarian Church in East Greenwich, RI at 6 PM. There will be sitting/walking/sitting and a Dharma sharing based on Thay's wonderful book on questions and answers . . . Answers from the Heart. Vicky and Wendy will co-facilitate, and it, too, should be a lovely evening.

Next weekend we will be gathering at the Senexet House in Woodstock, CT for the New London Community of Mindfulness retreat focused on... Riding the Waves of Change Fearlessly: Maintaining Our Balance in Turbulent Times there is still space! . . . We will begin at 4 PM on Friday and end on Sunday after lunch. I hope you will be able to spend the weekend stopping and being peace with us in a beautiful setting! For information and registration forms go to

Saturday, October 27, we will meet in West Hartford for a Day of Mindfulness from 9:30- 4 Pm This is being organized by the West Hartford Sangha and should be a delight. I hope you can join us. If you'd like to, please go to

I hope you will be able to be with us for some of these gatherings and until then, may you be peace.

with much love, many hugs and the freedom of a raindrop flying through the night sky for you, Joanne

Aware of the suffering caused by unmindful speech and the inability to listen to others, I am committed to cultivating loving speech and compassionate listening in order to relieve suffering and to promote reconciliation and peace in myself and among other people, ethnic and religious groups and nations. Knowing that words can create happiness of suffering, I am committed to speaking truthfully using breathing and walking in order to recognize and to look deeply into my anger. I know that the roots of anger can be found in my wrong perceptions and lack of understanding of the suffering in myself and in the other person. I will speak and listen in a way that can help myself and the other person to transform suffering and see the way out of difficult situations. I am determined not to spread news that I do not know to be certain and not to utter words that can cause division or discord. I will practice Right Diligence to nourish my capacity for understanding, love, joy, and inclusiveness, and gradually transform anger, violence and fear that lie deep in my consciousness.
