We will be meeting tonight at 6:30 at St. Matthew’s Church in West Barrington. We will be having a sitting and walking meditation and recite the Five Mindfulness Trainings. I will talk about living our life with those trainings and we will have a Dharma sharing. I hope that you will be able to be with us.

Join us for a Day of Mindfulness, practicing together to nourish and strengthen the roots of peace and joy in our families. There will be a children’s dharma talk followed by a talk for adults and games and mindful activities for children. We will all practice walking meditation, deep relaxation and eat lunch together mindfully.
According to medical researchers at Duke University, children and parents who use these practices are able to reduce stress, accept the past and worry less about the future, make more rational decisions and better appreciate their environment and themselves. They also showed an increased ability to focus and maintain concentration, reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, improve sleep quality, reduce aggression and cope with chronic conditions.
Suggested donation per family is $10; please feel free to pay what you can. Individuals are welcome as well as families of all kinds and children of all ages.

Joanne Friday received the authority to teach from Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh in 2003 and offers retreats and Days of Mindfulness throughout North America. She lives in Rhode Island where she is the guiding teacher for the five sanghas which comprise the Rhode Island Community of Mindfulness. She is also an Associate Chaplain at the University of Rhode Island.
There are two opportunities for sangha and friends on the path to contribute by offering food.
1. The first one that was discussed at the first of the month meeting is a potluck for the URI Kingian Nonviolence Institute. Based on the philosophy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. the Nonviolence Summer Institute 2010 offers joins national and international participants as they learn the skills necessary for promoting peace, nonviolence & social change in their communities. This is an intensive training for educators, non-profits, professionals, faculty, students, NGO workers, government officials, human-rights activists, clergy, law enforcement, health care workers, community organizers, and all those interested in promoting peace get together, learn and share their experiences. There will be up to 70 students from all over the world who would greatly appreciate a home-cooked meal scheduled for Monday, June 13th at URI. Please contact Clare Sartori if you are able to provide an offering.
2. The second occasion is for the day of mindfulness scheduled for the Land Trust on July 16th. For that we are seeking people who would like to support the sangha by providing one of the following:

The “Eye of the Buddha” was a 21 day retreat given in Plum Village in the year 2000. There was a strong focus on sangha. Thay spoke of the sangha as a “super organism” or a “holy organism.” Below you will find links to two of the Dharma Talks, from 6/2/2000 and 6/8/2000. I note that at the beginning of the talk on 6/2/2000, Thay pointed out the window and indicated that we should listen to the birds. In the talk on June 8, Thay also began his teaching on the Sutra on Absolute Truth. These talks have deeply informed thoughts on sangha, and you are invited to listen to them, particularly if there is an aspiration to be a sangha builder.
